You are the general manager of a carpentry shop which manufactures furniture pieces for specific purchasers. One day, when you enter your office, the president of the company, Tony Gennara, enters your office, closes the door, and then demands that you fire one of the workers, John Drummond. He has even written the termination letter.
These are the facts:
John Drummond is a maintenance carpenter for your firm. He is also a strong environmentalist.
John has become quite concerned about the carbon monoxide emission levels of your company, and in fact became convinced that the company was polluting a nearby stream. He circulated petitions around the plant asking others to force company compliance, but had no takers.
Finally, John wrote to Tony Gennara, the President of the company, complaining about the emissions. Tony sat John down and explained that their emissions fell within EPA standards, and even showed him the letters showing compliance.
John responded by forwarding his complaint to OSHA, who then showed up and spent over an hour at the plant, forcibly shutting it down, while they confirmed the EPA approvals.
It was the next day that the President demanded you to fire John Drummond.
