Read the following case study and answer the questions that follow.
You have just started a new job as a public manager at a government department. As a stakeholder,
you are expected to handle all human resource related issues. Although, you have vast experience
in human resources, most of it has been in the private sector. This is your first job working in public
and, as such, you have to highlight the depth of your understanding of the field by performing various
tasks an HR manager would through your probationary period.

i) As a human resource practitioner, you need to be familiar with various aspects and functions, of which
you have control in an organisation. Your functions, as a practitioner, can be more clearly understood
through studying the human resources management model.

ii) Labour legislation provides institutions with a set of rules and guidance for ensuring fairness in the
workplace. As an HR manager, you need to ensure fair labour practice is being respected and
followed by the organisation to protect the rights of employees.
Refer to the Labour Relations Amendment Act and discuss five ways, with examples, of how this law
affects the functions you examined in the previous question.
Select any five functions of the human resource model and examine your role, as a public HR
manager, in ensuring that the processes involved run efficiently and to the benefit and development
of the organisation and staff. Give examples of your role privy to these functions.
