Women & World War II
Ellen DuBois and Lynn Dumenil argue that during World War II “Americans continued to reiterate traditional notions about woman’s proper sphere in the home even as they challenged these ideas in daily life” (493). Using the letters from Since You Went Away, The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter documentary, and Part IV (“Wartime”) of Linda Gordon’s biography of Dorothea Lange as your sources of evidence, write an essay that develops and supports this argument. In what ways did Americans reinforce conventional gender assumptions and arrangements during WWII? In what ways did women’s experiences during WWII challenge such assumptions and arrangements? Guidelines Essays should have an introduction w/ a clear thesis statement that answers the essay questions. The body of the essay should contain ample evidence, drawn from the letters in Since you Went Away, the documentary on Rosie the Riveter, and the biography of Lange to develop, support, and illustrate your points. You must make some use of each of these 3 sources. We are reading and discussing selections of Since You Went Away in class. You may certainly make use of additional selections not assigned on the syllabus or discussed in class. Indeed, you are encouraged to do so! You may make use of your textbook in developing your argument and providing basic information. Try to avoid quoting extensively from the textbook. Note that the point of the essay is NOT to regurgitate the textbook’s development of this argument, but to use these other sources to develop your own original analysis of the messages about gender and women’s experiences during WWII. No additional research is required or expected. Essays should be 6-7 pages long (NOT including title page and list of works cited). They should be typed and double spaced, with one-inch margins and page numbers. Include a title page with a creative title for the paper, your name, the course name and # and the date. Cite your sources using parenthetical method (Litoff and Smith 97). You may cite lecture notes like this: (Carter 4/15/2019). Include a list of works cited
