The prevalence of adulthood obesity has increased significantly in the past two decades. Physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are risk factors forobesity, but many are unaware of this fact. Evidence-based treatments recommend behavioral lifestyle change interventions in promoting loss of weight among obese adults (Felix & West, 2013). Interventions focused on reducing this prevalence can help decrease the risk of developing chronic health conditions like diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and aheart condition, and costs to the community and society (WHO, 2016).
Evidence from case studies and research indicates that health promotion is effective at producing considerable change. These strategies can change lifestyles and behaviors, and also impact the environmental, social and economic conditions that influence health.
Obesity is an intricate web of biological and societal factors that expose ahuman vulnerability to weight gain. Energy balance plays asignificant role in weight gain and thus in theobesity epidemic.Â To reverse the epidemic, practices, and places need to be supportive of active living, healthy eating, and physical activity (WHO, 2016). This canbe achieved through theprovision of education to create awareness and understanding among health providers and consumers.
The aim of this assignment is to create an intervention plan for reducing obesity in theadult population in Miami-Dade County.
Having a knowledge of obesity, risk factors, its consequences and ways to minimize the prevalence of this condition is vital. Many adults fall vulnerable to this disease because of lack of knowledge of its risk factors. To developing the nursing intervention, the following steps will be taken into account:
Identify adults who are obesity or overweight based on body mass index-this will include adults of age 20 and over diagnosed with obesity and overweight.
Administer questionnaire surveys to the study population. The surveys will seek to identity risk factors that increase the incidence and prevalence of obesity, such as physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, genetics and predisposing health conditions. The knowledge level of the study population about obesity, healthy diet and physical activity.
Based on the results, specially designed interventions will be applied to help out the target group. Through focus groups and participatory talks, the health practitioner will discuss evidence-based dietary, behavioral and physical activity interventions. The group will also be given relevant information, materials, and resources to read on their own, such as brochures, handouts, leaflets and pamphlets (NOO, 2010).
After being empowered with information and knowledge, the target population will be able to identify their own risk factors, take necessary measures modify their lifestyles by leading active lives and eating healthy diets. The progress of participant will be assessed based on the lifestyle changes each has made and also any improvement in the knowledge level.
A new survey will be administered to individuals with obesity and overweight to assess if their knowledge level about obesity and its related risk factors has improved.Â Participants who are likely to have made positive improvement are able to make important behavioral and lifestyle choices.
The primary focus of this intervention plan is to increase the knowledge level of obese and overweight people to identify risk factors of obesity and take appropriate actions. This will not only help reduce the prevalence of obesity but also lower the risk of developing chronic conditions.
