This Life Learning Paper meets the following Departmental learning outcomes: ● assist students in the development of competencies that will enable them to produce both academic and technical writing in their university career as well as competent communication in their professional future; ● provide venues to encourage the creation of imaginative literature; ● foster the ability to read, analyze critically, and produce literature in a variety of media, including print, digital and visual texts; ● introduce and reinforce a foundational understanding of theory and its importance in analyzing and interpreting literature and other cultural texts; This Life Learning Paper meets the following General Education learning outcomes: Aesthetic Analysis OR Effective Communication Literature: Fiction Literature or Elective Credit Old General Education or Elective Credit Windows Only for University General Education ENGL 2413 In order to submit a life learning paper for evaluation for college credit, you must have read multiple texts (not autobiography or biography) in a genre or category or by a single author. Texts can include novels, short story, poetry, plays, etc. The expectation is students will have read a minimum of five novels or plays or a minimum of 20 short stories and/or short poems; therefore, if reading shorter works, adjust according to a comparable expectation for a 3 credit hour course. By genre, we are referring to subcategories such as mystery, science fiction, western, fantasy, etc. By category, we are referring to categories such as American Literature, African American Literature, Graphic Novel, etc. If you are selecting a genre from popular literature, make sure that your author is professionally recognized. An understanding of literary analysis is the expected learning outcome whereby you form reasonable meaning and judgement of the work(s) using the language and principles of literary analysis. Through the life learning paper, you will synthesize literary analysis concepts with specific examples from your reading. Based upon the length requirements of the Concepts and Generalizations section, this paper should be 9-10 pages in length. The Concepts and Generalizations section should constitute at least 3-4 full pages of the overall paper length. Papers will be returned if not meeting the following form issues. If you are writing a literature life learning paper, you will address the following: Form Issues: Use APA format Use correct grammar and punctuation (verb agreement, use of possessives, contractions, etc.) Accurate syntax (sentence ordering, nonverbclause elements in standard, written English) Proper spelling (spellcheck and edit for standard spelling) Vocabulary (formalnot colloquial, use of collegelevel English: language that is addressed to an educated audience) Logical, signposted organization (headings, introduction to paper sections, transitions, paragraph organization) The English Department has on reserve in the Library the following book which may help you in the development of your life learning paper: Introduction to Literature textbook, Abrams.
