A news story reports that some firms request job applicants to show evidence of a graduate degree for jobs that traditionally did not require a degree. It is unclear whether a worker with a degree would provide a better performance in a non-graduate job. Indeed over qualification may be a problem. The trend is particularly strong in construction and manufacturing sectors. In these sectors apprenticeships have previously been the main gates into the industry. If indeed it is not clear that graduate works would be more productive than non-graduate in sectors such as construction and manufacturing, why would firms ask job applicants to report evidence of higher education? Relate your answer to why firms might be more likely to interview an applicant with a white-sounding name even if the applicant’s resume was identical to an applicant with a black-sounding name.
