If you are a DLS student, you are to submit a book review of about 4-6 pages on one of the following works:

Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy

Mark William Roche, Why Choose the Liberal Arts?

Michael S. Roth, Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters

·        
Fareed Zakaria, In Defense of a Liberal Education

 

The purpose of this review is to assess the overall clarity, effectiveness, appeal, and validity of this book.  The purpose here is not to summarize the book (although you will do so briefly); you MUST REVIEW, EVALUATE.

 

This review should be written in essay format.  Here are suggestions for how to approach it:

Include a title page (APA or MLA format).

 

·        
Write a strong paragraph of introduction, in which you introduce the book and narrow down to your thesis, your purpose, for the review.

 

·        
Devote individual paragraphs to the following: a brief summary of the book, the scope of the book, the scholarship of the book (being sure to check authors’ credentials, sources used within the text, etc.), the extent to which the book fulfills its purpose, particular strong sections and/or weak sections and reasons, other positives and/or negatives.  You may add to this list, as long as you present information in an organized way.  Your reader should never question the flow of the paper; one paragraph must lead smoothly from the previous paragraph.  Once again, you are not summarizing the book; you are reviewing it.  You should build your paragraphs around points of evaluations, NOT around content of individual chapters or sections of the book.
